Organic: What Is It And How Does It Apply To Me?

Organic?  What is it?

According to the Canadian Organic Growers Association, Organic is the only type of agriculture with a set of principles that puts nature first. These principles are enshrined in industry-developed standards approved by consumers and verified annually by third party organizations. As of 2009, federal are now backed by government regulation and oversight. Organic standards are based on seven general principles:

  • Protect the environment, minimize soil degradation and erosion, decrease pollution, optimize biological productivity and promote a sound state of health.
  • Maintain long-term soil fertility by optimizing conditions for biological activity within the soil.
  • Maintain biological diversity within the system.
  • Recycle materials and resources to the greatest extent possible within the enterprise.
  • Provide attentive care that promotes the health and meets the behavioural needs of livestock.
  • Prepare organic products, emphasizing careful processing, and handling methods in order to maintain the organic integrity and vital qualities of the products at all stages of production
  • Rely on renewable resources in locally organized agricultural systems.

How does this apply to Creations from Eden and the products we offer?

Creations from Eden carries some Organic products.  We do NOT, however, carry Certified Organic Products.  The products that are labelled as Organic come to us in a Certified Organic form, however once we open the package, whether it be a drum, pail or bag, that product loses it's certification as we do not have our Organic Handlers Certification.

How does Creations from Eden not being Certified apply to me?

Unless you, yourself, are certified, you cannot claim that you are selling a Certified Organic product.  As a non-certified customer, you can purchase our Organic products to use in your creations (please look under the Organic regulations about what you can and cannot claim on your labels with regards to Organic labelling).  We did look into getting our certification, however, the annual cost is high ($1500 to $2500 depending on the volume we sell), plus a 2% royalty to the certifying body on every sale.  This would increase the prices our customers would have to pay for the identical product they currently purchase from us.  After polling our customers, and given the feedback we received, we decided to continue purchasing our Organic products in a Certified format and then selling them to you in a non-certified format.  Currently, we are aware that only one of our competitors actually meets the Certified criteria in Canada, although we could have outdated information.  So, if you are needing a certified product to meet your standards, please enquire with the other companies and ask to see their certificate prior to counting on them as your Certified Organic supplier.  The last thing you want is to be ready for your inspection, only to discover, that the products you have been buying are not actually Certified.
